Arthritis of the spine, also called osteoarthritis of the spine, is a degenerative spine condition that impacts the joints and discs in the spine. Arthritis of the spine is often found in the cervical spine (neck) or lumbar spine (lower back) because those are the two areas of the spine that get the most wear over the years.
While mild versions of arthritis of the spine are often not accompanied by symptoms including pain, numbness, tingling and weakness, this condition can sometimes become evident if arthritis causes another spine condition, such as spondylolisthesis. If you are experiencing pain in your neck or lower back that gradually worsens as the day continues, you should schedule an appointment with your physician to determine the cause of your pain.
If you know you have spinal arthritis, the pain in your back could be an indication that your condition is either progressing or that your arthritis has caused the development of another spine condition. When arthritis is present in the spine, it breaks down the joints and discs that cushion and give mobility to the vertebrae of the spine. As the joints and discs gradually deteriorate, the vertebrae can slip out of placement, resulting in spondylolisthesis or spinal stenosis.
