Arthritis of the spine is a condition that affects the joints of the spine, causing them to swell and stiffen. Because of the pain and stiffness patients with arthritis of the spine experience, traveling with this condition can be difficult. Sitting in one position for hours can cause limited mobility in that area of the spine, posing a threat on your upcoming vacation activities.
If you’ve been diagnosed with arthritis of the spine and you are preparing for an upcoming trip, there are a few tips you should know to help prevent the flare up of your pain and symptoms while you travel.
- Be proactive about your medication. If you are taking prescription medication for your arthritis of the spine pain, be sure to bring your medication on the trip with you and take it at the recommended time. This will help prevent a flare-up of your symptoms. If you are not taking prescription medication, ask your doctor about the benefits of taking an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication for your condition. If your doctor approves this medication, take a normal dosage at the start on your trip to help prevent any swelling in the joints.
- Move around frequently. Sitting in one position, whether in a car or plane, can lead to joint stiffness and an onset of arthritis of the spine symptoms. Be sure to move around every 30 minutes or hour to prevent your joints from swelling. This could be walking the plane aisle or stretching your legs at a rest stop.
- Bring a hot/cold compress. Alternate between hot and cold compresses to help prevent the pain of your arthritis of the spine symptoms. Bring a cooler in the car to store your ice pack, or ask one of the stewardesses on the plane to store your ice pack for you. You can also buy an adhesive hot to cold compress at your local drug store to wear during your travels.
