Bone spurs are smooth extrusions of bone that can develop on the edges of vertebrae or in the vertebral joints in the neck and back. Most often, these growths accompany the onset of osteoarthritis as the body’s natural response to the loss of cartilage on the joints and the resulting bone-on-bone contact. The problem with bone spurs is that they can compress nerve roots or the spinal cord. They can also make regular movement difficult and uncomfortable. Bone spurs are not reversible and there is no traditional cure for them. Treatment is designed around managing symptoms, improving or maintaining spinal flexibility and taking steps to have a healthier spine, such as quitting smoking or losing weight.
At USA Spine Care, we offer several treatment options to patients who are experiencing the symptoms of bone spurs. These include:
These procedures are all outpatient in nature and involve a small muscle-sparing incision. This means we are able to offer patients a shorter recovery time and less risk of complication compared to traditional open spine surgery.^
