A degenerative spine is a condition where the structures of the spine, including the disc, joints, muscles and ligaments, undergo degenerative changes due to wear over time. As a result, this can cause these structures to dry out and lose their elasticity, causing pain to the extremities, numbness, weakness and tingling. To help relieve your symptoms, the stretches described in this article can get you started on your journey to wellness.
Nonsurgical options for a degenerative spine
The following daily degenerative spine stretches can help you regain your flexibility and get you back to the activities you have been missing out on:
- Hamstring. Sit on the floor and straighten one leg out in front of you. Next, place your other foot on the inner thigh of your straightened leg. Bend your body forward and reach toward the toes of your straightened leg. Hold this position for 30 seconds and repeat this stretch on each side.
- Hook-lying combination. Lie flat on your back, with your knees bent and shoulder-width apart. Squeeze your stomach muscles and lift your right arm and left leg to the point where you feel comfortable. Hold this position for three seconds and lower your arm and leg. Repeat this stretch on each side.
- Knee to chest. Lie on your back, with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor. Bring your knee toward your chest gently, while holding the front of your knee. Be sure to hold this stretch for three seconds. Repeat this stretch on each side.
- Pelvic tilt. Lie on your back, with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor. Next, tighten your abdominal muscles. Push your belly button toward the floor and flatten your lower back as you exhale. Hold this position for 10 seconds and then relax.
- Bridging. Similar to a pelvic tilt, lie on your back, with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor. Keep your knees hip-width apart and your hands at your side, with your palms facing down. Take a breath and then exhale, tightening your stomach, back and hip muscles. Then, lift your body slowly off the ground. Hold this position for 10 seconds and then relax.
Surgical options for a degenerative spine

Our minimally invasive procedures use small incisions, which do not unnecessarily disrupt the muscles or ligaments surrounding the spine, to relieve the pressure on the damaged disc.
