Failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS) is a term describing the return of symptoms, or new pain, that the original procedure was supposed to treat. In this situation, patients are typically recommended to resume trying conservative treatment options that were attempted before their surgery, such as medication and physical therapy.
Many patients may also turn to alternative treatments such as yoga, chiropractic care and acupuncture that are outside of mainstream medicine. Although there is debate and continued research among the medical community about the effectiveness of these methods, there are many individuals who do report finding relief from FBSS with alternative treatments. It is important to work closely with your primary care provider to make sure that any new therapies you explore are compatible with your individual condition and any existing treatments.
For patients with failed back surgery syndrome, the thought of undergoing another procedure may be a source of anxiety, despite the pain being experienced. However, your doctor or specialist may recommend it if a comprehensive course of conservative and alternative treatments do not seem to be improving symptoms.
The board-certified surgeons+ at USA Spine Care are proud to perform minimally invasive spine surgery that can treat FBSS and other spine conditions. Our outpatient procedures involve a less than 1-inch incision, which spares muscles and offers less risk of complication compared to traditional open spine surgery.
