Failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS) is a term that describes the condition of someone who underwent surgery to treat a degenerative spinal condition and is still experiencing symptoms or has developed new symptoms. FBSS is more common in patients who undergo open spine surgery instead of minimally invasive procedures. The symptoms of FBSS can vary greatly, depending upon the original condition that led to the surgical procedure. Prominent symptoms include chronic pain, limited mobility, joint stiffness, headaches and shooting pain in the extremities.
There are many different factors that can contribute to the development of failed back surgery syndrome. Some common causes include:
Additionally, surgery to fix one part of the spine can sometimes cause new problems to develop in another area, resulting in symptoms that are similar to those of FBSS.
The failed back surgery syndrome treatment plan that your physician recommends will depend greatly upon the original condition that you were experiencing and the area of your spine that is being affected. It’s possible that you will be able to manage your symptoms through conservative treatments such as pain medications, hot and cold compresses, physical therapy and anti-inflammatory injections. You may also decide to incorporate alternative options, such as chiropractic care and massage therapy, into your treatment regimen.
While another surgical procedure may not sound ideal, it may be your best option if your symptoms persist after several weeks or months of conservative and alternative treatment. At USA Spine Care, we offer minimally invasive surgery that is a safer and effective alternative to open spine procedures.^
