If you have recently been diagnosed with a disc protrusion, it’s natural to have questions about your treatment options. While effective pain management is the ultimate goal with any approach, the specific therapies used to this end can vary widely. Conservative treatments are generally tried first. If those strategies prove to be ineffective after several months, surgical options may then be considered.
Some of the most common questions patients ask regarding disc protrusion treatment options include:
- What medications are available? Many people find pain relief through nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen. Doctors can also prescribe stronger anti-inflammatory drugs, such as celecoxib, or administer steroid injections to the injury site.
- Will bed rest help? Lying down can relieve pressure on your neck or back and allow your vertebrae to decompress. Resting on your back for even a few minutes at a time can provide significant pain relief, but extended periods of inactivity are usually not recommended.
- Are there any alternative treatments? Chiropractic manipulation, yoga, acupuncture, meditation and massage have all been shown to be effective in reducing discomfort for some patients. Make sure you consult with your physician before starting any alternative treatment.
- Can disc protrusions heal on their own? While a damaged disc will never completely heal on its own, the part of the disc that protrudes often shrinks after a few months, relieving pressure on the compressed nerve that’s causing your symptoms.
- Will I need surgery? Surgery is usually only recommended when all other treatment options have failed. If your doctor determines you would be a good candidate for surgery, the type of operation recommended for you will depend upon the exact cause of your disc protrusion. In order to determine this, a series of diagnostic tests will be required.
