Understanding the goals of treatment

Facet syndrome, or facet disease, is another term for osteoarthritis of the spine. Like all types of arthritis, this condition is not reversible. Facet disease is usually caused by a loss of cartilage in one or more vertebral facet joints leading to inflammation as a result of increased bone-on-bone friction. In addition to local aches and stiffness, the most debilitating symptoms are often the result of nerve compression.

Surgical treatment for facet syndrome involves decompression of spinal nerves that have been affected by inflamed joints or arthritic bone spurs. Minimally invasive treatment for facet syndrome

Here are some examples of the minimally invasive treatment options that we offer at USA Spine Care:

• Facet thermal ablation. This procedure is used to desensitize a small nerve within the facet joint that can become inflamed from facet syndrome, relieving the pain that comes with this condition.
• Foraminotomy. A foraminotomy is surgery that involves the opening up of foramina, which are small openings between the vertebrae where the nerve roots exit the spinal cord. Facet syndrome can narrow these passages due to swollen joints or the development of bone spurs.
• Laminotomy. If facet syndrome is causing narrowing of the spinal canal, a surgeon may perform a laminotomy to take pressure off the spinal cord. This procedure involves removal of the lamina, which is a flat surface on the vertebral arch that helps to form the spinal column.
