Blood flow restriction training is a physical therapy technique designed to improve muscle strength without the need for heavy lifting. Typically, a trained therapist will use a cuff, similar to a blood pressure cuff, that restricts blood flow in the target extremity. When performing resistance training, these conditions have been shown to stimulate muscle growth with much smaller than normal loads.
While often used for athletes, blood flow restriction training can help patients dealing with muscle weakness regain the strength needed to improve mobility and posture. Chronic pain and mobility problems are not something that people have to just live with. We’re providing the following information to help you make an informed and confident decision about your care. Please feel free to reach out if you have questions about the treatment options at USA Spine Care.
Blood flow restriction training may be recommended in situations where muscle atrophy has developed enough to restrict movement and limit the ability to lift heavy loads. For these patients, muscle weakness can cause a downward spiral where health worsens due to a sedentary lifestyle that causes muscles to deteriorate which in turn makes it even more difficult to exercise.
This can occur in a wide range of conditions, including:
Blood flow restriction training may also be included as part of a rehabilitation plan after a surgical procedure. This is particularly true if the patient needs to readjust to an active lifestyle after long periods of remaining sedentary.
A blood flow restriction training session will typically begin with a patient sitting or lying back on a table. The therapist will position the pneumatic cuff on the upper or lower extremity and engage a pump to restrict blood flow. The therapist will then guide the patient through a series of strengthening exercises that can be performed with less resistance than normal due to the restriction.
The specific cuff pressure and exercises performed will depend on the patient, their condition and recovery goals. Like other physical therapy techniques, blood flow restriction therapy takes time to show results as it is based on developing muscle strength.
Therapeutic treatment costs can vary depending on the number of sessions, other treatments being performed and insurance coverage. USA Spine Care facilities accept patients with Medicare, most private health insurances, as well as workers’ compensation and personal injury cases. One of our representatives can answer any questions you have about the cost of blood flow restriction training.
