What to expect during an MRI with or without contrast

An MRI is most often described as a long open tube with a sliding table that the patient lies on. The MRI device consists of powerful magnets that create a magnetic field while a transmitter directs radio waves toward the body. The MRI technician will work from an adjoining room and can speak to the patient via microphone.

A patient undergoing an MRI procedure should expect to follow these steps:

• Unless otherwise instructed, patients will generally eat and drink normally and not cease taking any medications
• Since an MRI uses magnetism, patients will change into a gown and remove any and all objects potentially containing met such as jewelry, glasses, hairpins or hearing aids
• The procedure often lasts between 15 minutes to an hour, but can be longer depending on individual conditions or circumstances
• Patients who have fear of enclosed spaces or anxiety may be given a sedative to help with relaxation
• Headphones or earplugs may also be provided to reduce any noise made by the machine during the procedure
• It is extremely important to stay perfectly still while the MRI takes images to ensure they are clear and useful to the physician

Once the procedure is completed, patients should be able to resume activities as normal. Sometime after, a trained physician will study the results and review them in a separate appointment to discuss next steps.
