A bulging disc in the back is a frustratingly common condition. The lumbar (lower) region of the spine is particularly vulnerable to bulging discs and other conditions because this area is responsible for basic movement as well as supporting most of the body’s weight. This means the discs in the lumbar spine are under an increased amount of pressure that can accelerate natural degeneration.
As a result, lower back pain is quite common and can affect people of all ages, although it is most frequently experienced by people over the age of 50. The good news is that while aging and natural wear are largely unavoidable, there are steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of developing a painful bulging disc in the back.
One of the most common causes of a bulging disc is natural breakdown of the spinal discs due to the aging process. As we grow older, our discs weaken as a result of natural changes that lead to a loss of elasticity. However, there are a number of other factors that can increase the likelihood of developing a bulging disc or another degenerative spine condition, including:
By making small lifestyle changes like quitting smoking, getting regular exercise and eating a healthier diet, you may reduce your risk of developing a bulging disc. However, even some lifestyle changes do not guarantee you will avoid these conditions.
While many cases of bulging disc pain can be effectively treated with nonsurgical treatment, such as physical therapy and lifestyle changes, some patients may require surgical treatment for pain relief.
At USA Spine Care, we provide minimally invasive decompression and minimally invasive stabilization surgery that can be performed on an outpatient basis with the use of muscle-sparing techniques. Our procedures are a safer and effective alternative to traditional open back surgery, offering our patients a shorter recovery time and less risk of complication.^
