What is a bulging disc?

A bulging disc refers to a spinal disc that is extending out of its normal perimeter in the spinal column. The disc bulge itself is not necessarily symptomatic, but problems can arise if disc material comes in contact with the spinal cord or a nerve root in the surrounding area.

How is a bulging disc treated at USA Spine Care?

In most cases, the symptoms of bulging discs respond well to conservative treatment. If, however, you do not find the results you want, surgery might be considered. At USA Spine Care, we offer several treatment options for bulging disc problems:

  • Discectomy. Using muscle-sparing techniques, our surgeons carefully remove the portion of the bulging disc that is causing nerve compression to relieve symptoms at the source.
  • Laminotomy or foraminotomy. When a bulging disc compresses surrounding tissues, these procedures may be recommended to open up space in the central spinal canal or nerve root exits.
  • Minimally invasive stabilization. This approach is recommended for advanced cases of disc degeneration where the disc needs to be carefully removed and the affected region of the spine stabilized through fusion. These procedures are an outpatient alternative to traditional open spinal fusions that require overnight hospitalization and a long, often difficult, recovery process.
